Gregory Alan Isakov
It gives me great pleasure on this beautiful Monday of a cold December to talk about the amazing voice and music of one of my top favorites from the indie folk acoustic music genre, Gregory Alan Isakov. Music in it’s brilliant form can move any one. Any music in any genre played beautifully, written beautifully and created with soul and passion can stir any mind and transport anyone in a heavenly cauldron of beautiful tunes and crafted lyrics. Music in this dreamy form does touch me and relaxes me in every way. And you will also feel the same after listening to Gregory Alan Isakov.
A little about Gregory Alan Isakov
Every time I hear the beautifully crafted songs from Isakov, all I hear is wholesome goodness, be it in lyrics, in his guitar playing, in the tunes, in his golden voice, his folk accompaniments in various exotic instruments and in the feel of his songs of the rural heartlands and of the freshness of the surroundings. His music is haunting, mellow, absorbing and a truly immersive experience. I love to play his songs virtually in every situations, settings, circumstances, any day, any season. Among the indie folk artists, he is one of the most respected names, and in his own true right through the quality of his creations.
And now some basic facts about the artist. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, came to the United States of America at a very early age, first in Philadelphia and later settled in Colorado. In his own words, his constant travelling through the length and breadth of rural USA has tremendous influence on his song writing and music altogether, and anybody listening to his music will feel the same, as this farm boy goes back to his rural roots in his music and creates some kind of magic with it. As far my experience goes with listening to acoustic music and music with the rich baritones around, I will definitely keep him in similar leagues with Leonard Cohen, William Fitzsimmons, Greg Laswell and many more including Iron and Wine. His songs are simple, down to earth, pure works of art without pyrotechnics, just guitar and banjo and strings and sometimes even with Symphony orchestra 🙂
Albums of Gregory Alan Isakov
His most recent album is Gregory Alan Isakov with the Colorado Symphony. This is an exquisite offering with a complete symphony Orchestra from his home state, where he played few songs from his previous albums in an orchestral setting. Do give it a must try if you are already familiar with his music. His previous albums The Weatherman, This Empty Northern Hemisphere, That Sea the Gambler and Songs for October bears every mark of the truly talented singer songwriter in creating what he so effortlessly creates and gifts all his fans worldwide.
Gregory Alan Isakov, presence among fans
His presence and connection with his fans is well known. I hope some of you might have watched him live, then you will know that he keeps his listeners engrossed, totally absorbed. In one of his shows, he requested all the stage lights to be put off, and he played in absolute darkness with no lights on, and that made that performance hauntingly beautiful, with a complete silence among his fans as they just sat there listening to him with rapt attention. I will try to share this concert with you here 🙂
