American Made.....Tom Cruise at his humorous best
I decided to hit the theaters yesterday for this latest Tom Cruise flick, American Made, and I didn’t know what to expect, as I was not very familiar with the real life incidents on which this film is based.
The film started at 3-15 pm afternoon and ended at 5-44 pm in the evening. So, it was almost more than two and a half hours of duration, and boy, I was not bored a single minute…:)
Tom Cruise played the character of Bobby Seal, an American pilot back in the 80’s during the Reagan regime, primarily as a TWA airline pilot. And we got a sense of the eccentric humor side of this pilot, as he messed with his cockpit controls to give one of his flights a real shake in mid flight just to wake up his sleeping passengers…..:):)…….man, that was fun indeed, rude though….
He was soon in the attention of the CIA agent Monty Schafer played by Domhnall Gleeson, who hired Seal for spying on insurgents and drug smugglers in Central America, besides his illegal trade of Cuban cigars which was his side business.
Bobby Seal appeared to me the kind of a guy who loved the adventures not looking at the ethical or moral part of it, but to be in the thick of things in the funny and crazy way……..and that’s where Tom does his best in his portraying this character…….he did one hell of a job.
From the very first of the movie, you have to sit back leasurely in your recliners and enjoy the fun ride, with Bobby Seal, CIA, Pablo Escobar od the dreaded Medelin drug cartel, FBI and the Whitehouse……can you even imagine what i am trying to portray here……:):)
In his own slick ass eccentric ways, Tom a.k.a Bobby Seal made all these agencies dance to his tunes, as he made millions, billions actually, in hard cash, through all his endless trips in his fancy jet from USA to the drug havens in Columbia and Nicaragua, not flustered at all from the life risk part of it in dealing with the dangerous cartels…….
He made all these cash and grew his team of pilots to carry on his infamous trade in an absolute in your face take it or leave it attitude. You will laugh your brains out in many instances in this movie, specially when Seal and his wife Lucy Seal played by Sarah Wright struggle to hide their cash as it piles up in their closets, in their fancy house, car, underground holes in their gardens, their horse farms and barns, and Seal got an entire bank vault to stack his cash…….and made several other banks richer with deposits….:):)
His Co characters in American Made
Mauricio Mejia played the famous Pablo Escobar, not in the way you would expect him to, but in a much more humorous way, playing into the most part of the movie in the hands of Bobby Seal. Seal kept everyone happy by delivering everything he was asked to and made his fortune in between…..:):)
But, if we look at it from a serious point of view, these incidents were real, and went into the history as the famous Iran Contra affair, one of the disturbing episodes during the Ronald Reagan regime. Thus the name American Made will have many meanings to how a TWA pilot was made to work for government agencies spying and involved in drug, arms smuggling and human trafficking, just to fight their war in Central America and other interests……
Sarah Wright as Lucy Seal, the confused wife, who’s husband played his ultimate prank by waking her up in the middle of the night to start packing for leaving their house for a new home, played her part to perfection, as she had to juggle between various roles, always playing into the shady yet funny business her husband was involved in which ultimately made her awfully rich…….:):)
And there is the wife’s brother, Caleb Landry Jones, who in his swearing best was engaged by Bobby for dusting the floors of his makeshift airport hangar to keep a promise to his wife for providing his brother-in-law with a job………the brother’s character came to an end getting killed in the hands of the cartel for accidently blowing off the cash trail to the cops.
In the end, special mention must go to Doug Liman for taking us on this fun ride into these very serious incidents in the 80’s drug war by the US government and the infamous story of Bobby Seal.
As, Bobby’s end came in a satirical comedy style depiction of his warning to anybody coming near his car to stay back each time he got into it to start the engine…….he knew his end would come either in the hands of Escobar, or the CIA, FBI or the government.

My recommendation is a definite watch for this movie. It will keep you glued in suspense, humor, surprise and actions in a very unconventional style……:) and our poster boy Mr. Cruise will definitely keep us engrossed in his movies for much longer in the future as he has done in this one…..
We shall be keenly waiting for the next flick in the Mission Impossible franchise next year……..till then, enjoy American Made.
